This section provides information on editing site content, including adding pages and images to your Teaching Commons Website.

Create a New Web Page

  1. Click the new page button on the Contribute Toolbar.
  2. Found within the templates folder are the document type templates for the site. Choose a document type for the new page. (for more info. on document types, see Templates).
  3. Enter a Title into the Page Title field.
  4. Click OK to create the new page.
  5. Add content.
  6. Click the Save for Later button on the Contribute Toolbar to save the draft without publishing it live to the site. Click the Publish button to make the page live on your website.

Edit an Existing Web Page

  1. Once you have logged into your website, the site is displayed in browser mode. You can navigate through the site to the page you would like to edit.
  2. Click the Edit Page button from the Contribute Toolbar.
  3. The page you are editing now becomes a draft, unavailable for editing by anyone else until you publish the page. A "draft" icon appears in the "Pages" menu in the upper left section of Contribute.
  4. Make any changes or additions to content.
  5. Click the Save for Later button on the Contribute Toolbar to save the draft without publishing it live to the site. Click the Publish button to make the page live on your website.

Note: while a page is opened for editing and listed as a draft in the Pages menu, no other content manager is able to open that page for editing.

Edit Text

Editing text on a Contribute web site is as easy as editing text within a word processor. The Contribute Toolbar holds a number of common text editing tools such as font menu, font size, and formatting tools. Place the cursor into the region you wish to edit or add text content and make the changes. To make changes to the text format, highlight the text and choose a feature, such as text color.

Insert Image

  1. Place the cursor in the position on the page where you will insert the image.
  2. Click the Image icon on the Contribute Toolbar.
  3. Choose From Website to insert an image that is already loaded onto your web server, or choose From My Computer to load a new image.
  4. Browse and select the desired image from the appropriate directory.
  5. Click the OK or Select button to insert the image.

Add an Link to an External Site

  1. Enter or highlight the text that will act as the link.
  2. Click the Link button on the Contribute Toolbar.
  3. Choose Browse to Web Page.
  4. On the insert link window enter the full url address (including http://) into the web address text field.
  5. In the Advanced Options section, choose New Window from the Target frame drop down menu. This allows the link to open in a separate browser window.
  6. Click OK to complete inserting the link.

Add a Link to a Page within the Web Site

  1. Enter or highlight the text that will act as the link.
  2. Click the Link button on the Contribute Toolbar.
  3. If you have recently edited the page you would like to link to, choose Drafts and Recent Pages.
  4. Choose the page you would like to link to.
  5. If you have not recently edited the target page or it is not listed in the recent drafts list choose the Browse to Web Page option.
  6. You may enter the URL into the web address text field, or click browse and browse for the desired web page.
  7. Click OK to finalize inserting the link.

Create Links Within a Page

Creating links within a page requires 2 steps: Inserting an "Anchor" to the image or text you want to link to, and then creating a link to the anchor.

Insert Anchor

Anchors act as placeholders on a page and are useful on pages with a large amount of content or multiple headings. Anchors are used within the On This Page Module, which provides a menu that links to different key points on the same page.

  1. Find and place the cursor at the point on the page where the anchor will be inserted. Subject headings, points where content shifts topic, or important images are examples of often used anchor points.
  2. From the top menu select Insert > Section Anchor.
  3. Enter a title for the anchor.
  4. Click OK to insert the anchor.

A black flag will be set in the anchor location. This flag is only visible when a page is in editing mode.

Add a Link to an Anchor

  1. Insert an anchor at the desired target destination.
  2. Highlight the text that will link to the anchor.
  3. Choose the link button from the Contribute toolbar.
  4. Select Drafts and Recent Pages.
  5. Choose the page where the anchor is placed from the Drafts and Recent Pages List. You may also Browse to the page if needed.
  6. Click the Section Anchor drop down menu.
  7. Select the desired anchor.
  8. Click OK to insert the link.
