Grants and Initiatives

IL Mini Grant Program

Since 1995, the CSU has  been a leader in the advancement of information literacy, with the goal of having CSU students be competent and comfortable producers, critical evaluators, and consumers of information, a vital skills set for our information society.  In 2001, once again, the CSU took a leadership role, partnering with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and other institutions of higher education, to develop iSkills ™ (formerly the ICT Literacy Assessment). Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy is an important corollary to information literacy, with its emphasis on acquiring skills to solve information problems using sources in digital formats.

iSkills Assessment

iSkills ™ (formerly the ICT Literacy Assessment) is an innovative scenario- and web-based test to assess students’ skills in information and communication technology (ICT) literacy.  The assessment, developed by ETS in partnership with the CSU and other universities, contains interactive and realistic simulations of information resources and applications such as the Web, article databases, and spreadsheeting and word processing to track and evaluate how students actually go about solving problems with information technology. It provides group- level diagnostic information for the key ICT proficiencies needed for success in higher education and beyond in the work environment. It encompasses both the technical skills and cognitive information literacy abilities needed to effectively access, evaluate and use information from a wide range of resources.  For more information on iSkills ™ go to http://www.ets.org/iskills.

Testing may occur at any time during the year.  Score results are issued to individual students as well as to institutions to provide diagnostic information on the seven subcomponents of ICT literacy. Costs of the testing will be supported by the Office of the Chancellor for 2008 - 2009.  For more information about the assessment or to participate in a test administration, contact Stephanie Brasley, email sbrasley@calstate.edu.
