How do you teach 1000 students out of a 150 seat classroom? If you are Bruce Robertson at San Francisco State, you use iLearn to extend the boundaries of the traditional classroom.
The hybrid Principles of Marketing class was developed five years ago in partnership with Jason Cole of the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching as a way to better meet the diverse needs of students in a "mega-section" class. Using a variety of live and archived content delivery methods and an online testing program, the class is designed to let each student choose how and when they want to experience the course. Since the class was introduced in Fall 2002, it has more than doubled in size and will enroll more than 1300 students this Fall including students from over 40 different programs on campus.
A journal article describing the class was published in Innovate, the online journal of online education.
