About Us

The California State University has partnered with the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation for the past ten years in reforms strengthening recruitment, preparation, and induction of California teachers, particularly focusing on preparing new teachers for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), clinical partnerships and co-teaching with K-12 master teachers, residencies at exemplary K-12 schools, and focused induction equipping beginning teachers for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and for teaching of the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

This project is driven by two central facts: (1) California needs excellent teachers and (2) CSU has the expertise to produce these teachers. Over the past decade, CSU has produced more than 100,000 fully qualified teachers and has been a leader in the transformative redesign of teacher preparation aimed at developing better-prepared 21st century teachers. The system is now ready to go to scale with effective designs to produce a generation of new teachers for California prepared to advance the CCSS and NGSS.
